The United States has directed India to lift its prohibition on wheat exports.

US, UN: The US hopes India will lift its prohibition on wheat exports, according to the country's senior UN ambassador, who warned that the move would exacerbate global wheat shortages. 

\"We're pushing nations not to restrict exports because we believe that any restrictions on exports would worsen food shortages," Linda Thomas-Greenfield said ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on food security.

 India's minister of state for external affairs, V-LaValley Muralidharan, will speak at the UN conference, which will be headed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

 "We hope (India) would change its attitude when they hear the concerns made by other countries," Thomas-Greenfield added.

 New Delhi, which had earlier promised to provide wheat to nations historically reliant on Ukrainian exports, stated that it sought to secure "food security" for India's 1.4 billion people. 

 On Wednesday, Blinken will host another UN gathering, this time on food security. 

According to Thomas-Greenfield, the purpose of the meeting is to "get nations together to look at what countries might be able to help fill the gap" in wheat supply caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, two main exporters of the commodity. 

 She noted that the discussions will also identify "countries that require assistance from nations that can fill the gap." 

 She claimed the United States might be included among these countries, and that negotiations with American farmers were already starting on the subject. 

 In the aftermath of India's decision, wheat prices in Europe hit a new high on Monday.
